Mathraki Corfu, the southernmost and smallest of
the Diapontia isles, is also the most isolated one, due to the fact that it is
surrounded mostly by rocks. Home to approximately 100 residents, it provides a
quiet getaway from the busy Corfu island. It boasts rich vegetation, making it
ideal for nature lovers. Follow the old stone paths which will lead you to
places with panoramic views.
A major tourist attraction for Mathraki is the
infinite Portelo beach, that occupies most of the north-eastern coast of the
island. With its shallow crystal clear waters that slowly deepen, Portelo beach
is suitable even to those who do not know how to swim.
Every July there is a great festival in Mathraki
Corfu, where Corfiots and tourists gather to dance, eat and drink underneath
the beautiful star lit summer sky.
